Mkhuhlu woman attacked by mob after allegedly leaving newborn baby to die

A woman in Mkhuhlu, who allegedly dumped her newborn baby, leading the baby's death, narrowly escaped her own death following an incident of mob justice.

A 33-year-old woman who allegedly dumped her newborn baby in a pit toilet, which resulted in the child dying, narrowly escaped death at the hands of an angry mob on Wednesday, December 6.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, police in Calcutta were called to the scene where the the decomposing body of a newborn baby was found in a pit toilet at Hlangalezwe in Mkhuhlu.

He said the body was recovered by family members who went to clean a relative’s property. The gender of the child could not be established due to the decomposition.

Mohlala said police were then called to the scene and while busy at the property, they received information about an incident of mob justice.

Police rushed to the scene and upon arrival, a woman was found to be under attack by a mob.

He said that on further investigation, it was found that the woman who was attacked was expecting a baby, but following the days after she was expected to deliver the child, a baby was nowhere to be seen.

Mohlala said it was also established that the victim was staying on the property where the body of the baby was found. The woman was taken from the scene to the police station for questioning.

Police believe the woman might be linked to the matter of the baby that was found in the pit toilet. Mohlala said the investigation continues.
