A man from Masoyi was arrested after he allegedly shot his teenage son as he was cleaning his firearm. He recently appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court.

A Masoyi man was charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm after he allegedly shot and injured his 18-year-old son while cleaning his gun in December.

Kenneth Ngomane (41) appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 8, on the above charges. The matter has been postponed to January 11 for a formal bail application.

According to a media statement by a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Ngomane was arrested on January 5.

He said in the statement that a probe into the shooting incident had been launched, and it was discovered that Ngomane was not the lawful owner of the firearm. The records showed that the gun had belonged to his late father and that Ngomane did not have a firearm licence for it.

The police seized the firearm. It will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it was previously used in the commission of crime elsewhere. At this stage, the police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against him as the investigation continues.
