Mpumalanga tavern urged to beef up security

Tavern owners and liquor traders must ensure the safety of their customers and work with the police to prevent murders on their premises.

The Mpumalanga MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has called tavern owners and liquor traders to play a role in ensuring security at their places of trade.

“They must beef up security measures and also work closely with the police and other stakeholders to strengthen crime prevention measures. The number of shooting incidences at places of entertainment at night seems to be on the rise in the province. This requires all stakeholders and communities to work together,” said Shongwe.

Shongwe was reacting to a shooting at a tavern in Tweefontein that left three people dead this past Sunday. Other shooting cases that occurred in the vicinity of taverns were previously reported in Mantengelani in Bushbuckridge, Piet Retief, and Mayflower in Elukwatini.

“We are making a plea to tavern owners to unite in the fight against crime. They must never allow their places of entertainment to be turned into war zones. Therefore, close collaborations must be forged with communities and the police. Communities must also play their part by reporting any suspicious people or activities to the police,” said Shongwe.

He has appreciated the efforts of the police as they have already set up a task team to urgently arrest culprits in the Tweefontein shooting incident.
“We also condemn the acts of these shameless criminals who have scant regard for human life. Our police should spare no effort to ensure justice prevails and that they pay for what they did,” the MEC said.
