A fond farewell to Lowveld swimming legend Tannie Martie
Lowvelder remembers and pays tribute to a legend of the Lowveld swimming community, Martha Vitus, affectionately known as Tannie Martie, who passed away recently.
Long-time Lowveld swimming coach Martha Vitus, affectionately known as Tannie Martie, sadly passed away on March 7 after a long illness.
Vitus, born in 1941, was not only a beloved swimming coach, but also a devoted wife, a cherished mother and a pillar of the community, having been involved in the founding of a variety of sports clubs in White River.
Tannie Martie’s journey began in Durban and led her to White River, where she dedicated herself to fostering sportsmanship and camaraderie. Vitus’s dedication extended beyond local borders, as she led groups to participate in sports events in England, New Zealand, Sweden and Belgium.
Alongside her husband Leif, Martie spent 47 years enriching the lives of others before embarking on a new chapter in Sweden. Her legacy in White River is one of founding numerous sporting clubs, including the renowned Beavers Swimming Club in 1978. The club changed its name to Wild Geese in 1994, and Tannie Martie remained involved until 2019.

She was also involved with the White River Korfball Club from 1979 to 1995, as well as the Waterbok Hiking Club in 1995.
Her children, Ivan, Karin and Lynette, were not only coached by her, but also actively participated in these clubs. Under her guidance, countless young athletes flourished, and her influence extended far beyond the confines of the pool.
Martie’s devotion to her family knew no bounds either, as evidenced by her unwavering support for her three children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Even as she ventured to Sweden, her love transcended distance, nurturing bonds that would endure the test of time.
Her spirit was characterised by boundless determination and unwavering faith. Through life’s trials and triumphs, she remained steadfast, drawing strength from religious devotion. Her legacy of resilience and perseverance will continue to inspire all, resonating through the generations to come.

Though she may no longer be with us in body, Martie’s presence will forever dwell in the hearts of those who knew her, a testament to the enduring impact of a life well lived.
In the words of her daughter, Lynette: “No challenge was too big for her, and I will always remember Mummy’s words – to never give up.”
Her celebration of life service will be held at the Reach Church in White River on Saturday March 16 at 09:30, where family and loved ones will come together to honour her memory and find comfort in one another’s embrace.
