Suspect arrested for possession of dagga in Buffelspruit

A 28-year-old taxi commuter was arrested and is facing charges of dealing in dagga and being in contravention of the Immigration Act.

A 28-year-old man from the Kingdom of eSwatini was arrested on the R570 in Buffelspruit on March 24, by border policing members deployed on Operation Vala Umgodi.

The suspect had been commuting in a taxi, and when he was asked for his passport, he failed to provide the necessary documentation for him to be in South Africa.

He was also found with about 9kg of dagga with an estimated street value of R37 800. The suspect is facing charges of dealing in dagga and contravention the Immigration Act of South Africa.

The SAPS is working with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain his status in the country.

A provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the suspect would appear in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on March 25. Lowvelder had not received any official comment confirming the suspect’s appearance in court at the time of publishing.
