Nelspruit police confiscate cocaine worth more than R4m

A suspect was arrested in Mbombela after the trailer he was towing got disconnected from his light delivery vehicle and caused a minor accident, and some white powder he was transporting was discovered to be cocaine

  1. A 23-year-old man was arrested on Thursday May 2 after he was found in possession of about 11kg’s cocaine of more than R4m, when he caused a minor accident on the N4 in Valencia, Mbombela.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, a white Kia light delivery vehicle towing a trailer was being driven on the N4 when the trailer somehow detached and caused a slight accident.

“The Nelspruit SAPS attended the accident. Upon arrival, the members suspected something on the trailer. They discovered eight crates of some white powdered substances, which turned out to be cocaine. They immediately called their counterparts from the K9 Unit, as well as members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigative Unit to come on board,” he said.

An inquiry was opened and the driver was taken in for further questioning. The confiscated cargo will undergo some tests as part of the probe.

The police are adamant that the consignment could have been on its way to places in Gauteng, where the investigators will surely now focus as the case continues.
