Wildfire out on Uitkyk Road not contained, but under control for now

The cause of these fires is still unknown at this stage, and the residents of the area are urged to remain vigilant.

An enormous wildfire that broke out east of Shandon Estate on the Uitkyk Road on Wednesday afternoon, August 14, has not yet been contained, but is currently under control for now, and firefighters are monitoring the situation.

The Lowveld & Escarpment Fire Protection Association (Lefpa) deployed two air tractors, one spotter and a helicopter to get the fire under control from the sky, while the groundwork was left to the landowners and their teams and City of Mbombela firefighters.

Lefpa manager André Scheepers said they managed to bring the fire under control at about 17:00. The ground team is currently still on the ground monitoring the situation, as it can change at any time due to the windy weather.

Lefpa also warned everyone that the fire season is not over yet, as warmer and drier conditions are expected until at least the end of September.
