Wildfires rage east of Shandon Estate outside Mbombela

Landowners are advised to stay vigilant and use hosepipes to wet around their homes to keep the fire at bay if necessary.

An enormous wildfire broke out east of Shandon Estate on the Uitkyk Road on Wednesday afternoon, August 14.

The Lowveld & Escarpment Fire Protection Association (Lefpa) is currently on the scene, working to extinguish the fire. Lefpa’s André Scheepers said two air tractors, one spotter and a helicopter have been deployed to fight the fire.

He said at this stage, there is no estimation on when the fire will be contained, and he urged landowners and residents to stay vigilant.

Should anyone’s property be in danger of becoming engulfed, Scheepers said they should use hosepipes to wet their properties to keep the fire from reaching their doorsteps.

Scheepers said the cause of the fire is still unknown.
