UPDATE: Accident scene near Matsulu turn-off cleared, road reopened
The road was operating on a stop-and-go basis due to an accident that involved a truck and a sedan.
The N4 near the Matsulu turn-off was reopened after it had been operating on a stop-and-go basis for traffic due to an accident between an articulated truck and vehicle earlier today, December 8, which claimed one life, and not two as was reported before.
The second victim was critically injured and rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
The spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, said investigations are under way to get to the cause of the accident.
“I would like to correct that only one person in the vehicle succumbed to the impact of the injuries in the accident, while the other person was critically injured and was taken to the nearest hospital.
The truck driver was unharmed.
“The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage; however, we are calling on motorists to always drive with caution on the road and adhere to the rules. We are going to expect a high volume of cars on the roads for the festive season, and people need to rest when they are tired. Overtake when it’s safe to do so and ensure that your vehicles are roadworthy,” he said.
Mmusi also wished the injured victim a speedy recovery.
