Bus crash dims Matsulu Rugby Club’s semi-final joy

The club's driver was injured and hopitalised for a short while.

Matsulu Rugby Club’s celebrations of their victory in the Ehlanzeni Rugby Mayor’s Cup semi-finals was short lived.

The team were involved in an accident on their way back from seizing a 27-7 win against the Laeveld Ratels Rugby Club at the Malelane Rugby Club on Saturday, June 14.

The accident took place at the N4 and Air Street intersection in Malalane at about 19:00.
The team travelled in a Mercedes sprinter bus.

The traffic light at the intersection had just turned green for the traffic coming from Komatipoort. As the driver manoeuvred the bus across the intersection, an Isuzu double cab bakkie came from the right, running the red light and hitting the bus on the driver’s side,” said DM Sifundza, the club’s chairperson.

TRAC N4 and emergency services attended the scene.
Only the bus driver sustained injuries and was hospitalised. Sifundza confirmed that he has been discharged.

He said the bakkie’s driver and passengers were treated for some injuries.

The scene was cleared after about an hour.
