Mahlakwena community in shock and deep mourning after Zandile’s shooting

The loving mother will be laid to rest on Saturday at Kellysville Cemetery in Lydenburg.

A heartbroken Mkhabela family is calling for the swift arrest of those responsible for the murder of their beloved daughter, Zandile Emeldah Mkhabela (30).

Her body was discovered next to the Mahlakwena Road in Steelpoort at around 06:00 on Monday, July 1. Mkhabela, originally from Lydenburg, sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the forehead. A passer-by made the gruesome discovery and alerted the police.

According to a family member, Zandile was found lying next to her car – an Audi A1 – which was still idling on the roadside.

“She had just left home in Mahlakwena to report for duty at one of the local mines in the Eastern Limb. When she left, she was bubbly as usual. We never imagined it would be the last time we’d see her alive,” said her sister, Gugu Mkhabela.

A family friend, Rudo Mnisi, described the killing as cruel and calculated.

“A single bullet ended her life in what appears to have been a deliberate and heartless act. Her sudden passing has left her family, friends, and the entire Mahlakwena community in shock and deep mourning.”

Zandile was not only a dedicated and hardworking woman but also a loving mother. She leaves behind a six-year-old son, now forced to grow up without her love, care, and support.

“The pain of this loss is immeasurable, and the injustice of it cannot be ignored,” said the family in a statement.

An emotional Gugu said the murder was a double tragedy, as Zandile had been four to five months pregnant.

“We are devastated by her death. Our hope is in the police and the justice system. We have lost a caring and loving sister.”

Mnisi said the family and community are determined to see justice served.

“The community is grieving, and we are determined to see those responsible held accountable in Zandile’s name. Any form of assistance – be it legal, investigative, or advocacy – would mean a great deal to her loved ones and to all of us standing with her.”

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson for Limpopo SAPS, confirmed that a case of murder is under investigation.
