Burgersfort CBD shutdown amid taxi battles

Minibus taxi operators’ frustrations over routes and permit delays have sparked a shutdown of Burgersfort CBD.

A taxi battle has resulted in a total shutdown of the Burgersfort CBD this morning, September 11.

The minibus taxi operators in Tubatse are at loggerheads with the Internal Taxi Operators (Avanzas) over routes. Insiders also alleged that they are aggrieved by the government’s inability to issue their permits.

Some of the taxis blocking both the R555 and R37.

The shutdown has affected businesses in the CBD as employees have not been able to come into work, as well as pupils attending schools in the town. Some learners had to walk more than a kilometre to get to their schools.

As of 11:50, the main roads leading into Burgersfort, the R555 and the R37, were still blocked with Toyota Quantums.

Motorists are advised to avoid the Burgersfort CBD and to use alternative routes.
