UPDATE: Mayor intervenes in Burgersfort taxi clash

Mayor Eddie Maila met with Burgersfort taxi associations to resolve route disputes and restore order.

Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality’s mayor, Cllr Eddie Maila, has met with taxi associations operating in Burgersfort in a bid to resolve the impasse with local metered taxis (Avanzas).

The dispute has centred around certain taxi routes leading into town.

Maila called for calm and restraint among the associations to prevent conflicts that could escalate into violence.

He emphasised that the municipality cannot afford a situation that disrupts operations and endangers passengers who rely on these services daily.

He further directed the Municipal Traffic Law Enforcement Unit to act decisively by impounding vehicles operating without valid permits.

He reiterated his firm stance on peace and stability within the municipality, urging all associations to respect the law and the conditions of their operating licences.

The taxi associations held a meeting this morning.

Maila thanked the associations for engaging constructively and confirmed he will receive daily briefings on the latest developments.

All the blocked routes in the Burgersfort CBD were cleared at about 12:45.
