University honours Mpumalanga Department of Health HOD

Dr Lucas Ndhlovu ensured that healthcare services improve in Mpumalanga.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health has congratulated its head of department (HOD), Dr Lucas Khetani Ndhlovu, on his outstanding achievements.

Ndhlovu received the 2025 Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) Alumni Governance and Leadership Award.

Ndhlovu was awarded by the university in recognition of his distinguished and enduring contributions.

He is recognised in both the private and public sectors as a proponent of ethics and good governance.

“Your continued ingenuity and commitment towards the growth and development of the people of this country must be honoured and celebrated by your alma mater,” the president of the SMU convocation, Japhta Phala, said.

Your colossal achievements as a medical doctor, your growth through the ranks of the public health service from a medical officer to clinical manager, senior clinical manager, and chief executive officer of Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, and now the head of Mpumalanga Department of Health, are deservedly acknowledged. This award also represents your exceptional service to the health fraternity as a whole, including the leadership roles you hold in the sector,” the letter stated.

The executive committee of convocation and alumni at the university hosted Ndhlovu for a celebratory night in Pretoria on Saturday, October 25.

Ndhlovu was offered an opportunity to connect, network and share insights with SMU council members, the executive management committee, fellow alumni, friends of the university, and peers from corporate businesses, government health, and the science industries.

Ndhlovu is one of the most successful former students of Mafemani High School in Thulamahashe, Bushbuckridge.

He could not be reached for comment, but the Mpumalanga DoH spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, said the department had congratulated him.

Dr Lucas Khetani Ndhlovu received an Alumni Governance and Leadership Award.

“This is a milestone for him in advancing his career. The department will definitely benefit from his success, thereby ensuring that healthcare provision in the province improves. The HOD is doing a great job and his achievements prove that the department made the right choice in employing him,” said Malamule.
