Heavy rain and multiple crashes cause chaos on Mbombela roads

Heavy rain and multiple crashes caused widespread disruption in Mbombela over the weekend, with Summer Blaze traffic adding to road congestion.

One of several road accidents that occurred in Mbombela this weekend saw a car’s engine ejected through the bonnet and landing on the N4 at about 11:00 today, November 30.

The driver of a black VW Polo sedan travelling from west to east on the N4 lost control and hit a tree on the centre island.

The car came to a stop about 20m away from its engine.

Remarkably, the driver was not injured.

In another accident, a vehicle crashed into the centre barrier in Ferreira Street towards Steiltes at around 20:30 last night, shortly before a heavy storm hit the area.

No injuries were reported.

Several other incidents occurred along the R40 between Riverside Mall and the CBD, leaving debris scattered on the road this morning.

“There were many accidents last night and this morning,” said Divergent Ops’ Juandré Rautenbach.

Meanwhile, attendees of the Summer Blaze Festival at Mbombela Stadium were caught in last night’s downpour, with heavy rain sending people running for cover and leaving many soaked.

Roads were heavily congested as festival-goers made their way home.
