A breakdown of South Africa’s most stolen cars

Four popular car brands are most targeted by criminals in South Africa.

According to the latest data from global technology company Cartrack, Toyota, Volkswagen (VW), Nissan and Ford are topping South Africa’s most-stolen list.

These include popular cars such as Toyota Hilux, Corolla, and Fortuner; the VW Polo range; Nissan NP200 and Navara; and Ford Rangers.

According to Cartrack, criminals are increasingly using signal jamming devices to block vehicle tracking signals to steal cars.

Here are some ways that could help prevent your car from being stolen, especially during this festive season:
• Ensure your car is locked, even while you are driving
• Use anti-theft devices such as steering wheel lock, immobiliser and an anti-jamming tag
• Get a GPS tracking unit
• Park in well-lit areas
• Do not leave valuables inside the car, especially in plain sight
• Strengthen your driveway security, such as installing CCTV.
