Man due in court for beating wife to death near Hazyview

A domestic dispute turned deadly in Mkhuhlu, a Mpumalanga town widely known locally as 'the land of blood'.

A 45-year-old man is expected to appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court near Hazyview today, Friday, January 9, following the murder of his wife (37).

He was arrested on Thursday, January 8, less than an hour after he allegedly assaulted his wife with a wooden stick, subsequently killing her at about 08:00.

“At about 08:45, the suspect handed himself over to the police. He was immediately arrested and charged with murder,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.

The incident took place at the couple’s home in the Mashonameni section of Mkhuhlu during a domestic dispute between the victim and the suspect.

“We responded swiftly after receiving the information and, upon arrival at the scene, we were led to a room where the victim was found lying on the floor with no signs of life. Emergency medical services were summoned and she was certified dead,” added Ndubane.

The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed serious concern over the increasing number of domestic violence incidents in the province.

“The general reiterated that gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) remains a serious challenge in the country and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased. He warned that GBVF will not be tolerated. Members of the public are urged to seek assistance when experiencing conflict or abuse in their relationships,” said Ndubane.
