Mbombela NGO stand against bail in Lusanda Mathabela killing

Thandolwethu Foundation hails diligent investigation into Lusanda Mathabela’s murder as bail hearing continues in Nelspruit Magistrate's Court.

Thandolwethu Foundation Sisonke founder Dr Nhlanhla Thabethe said the organisation commends the investigation into the murder of 19-year-old Lusanda Mathabela.

Thabethe, whose NGO fights against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), spoke to Lowvelder Express shortly after one of Mathabela’s suspected killers appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Murder-accused Lungelo Sithole continued with his bail application but was remanded in custody, pending his next court appearance on Monday, February 16.

The court is expected to hear arguments from both the state and the defence during that sitting.

Sithole and co-accused Katlego Mokoena, both 18, allegedly went to Mathabela’s home in Mataffin and stabbed her to death on November 3 last year.

The court has heard that Mokoena and Mathabela were estranged lovers at the time.

The suspects were arrested shortly thereafter and have appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on several occasions, being remanded in custody each time.

In November, they had intended to apply for bail but withdrew the application after strong public opposition. It was only recently that the pair decided to reapply for bail.

Thus far, the court has only heard Sithole’s application, while Mokoena’s is scheduled for February 26.

Thabethe said her organisation hopes justice will prevail.

“We firmly believe that accused number 2 (Sithole) should not be granted bail, in the interest of justice, accountability, and the safety of the community,” she said.

“We remain steadfast in our support for the victim and her family and will continue to stand for truth, justice, and the protection of women and children.”

Thabethe also praised the investigating officer’s work, saying it showed diligence and commitment.

“From the evidence presented under oath, it is clear that there is a strong level of seriousness and preparedness in the ongoing investigation,” she said.
