UPDATE: Jaguar Land Rover SA responds after Mbombela Defender protest
Investigation into a dispute over a burnt Defender is ongoing following a protest outside a Mbombela dealership.
Following a bold protest by Pierre Coetsee yesterday, March 11, who left the charred remains of his 2023 Land Rover Defender outside the Mbombela dealership, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) South Africa has responded to Lowvelder’s inquiry regarding the matter.
“JLR South Africa was first notified of the matter involving Mr Pierre Coetsee’s vehicle and challenges with his insurance claim on December 15, 2025. Customer-handling procedures were immediately implemented. The investigation into the matter is still under way and we will communicate the findings directly to Mr Coetsee and his legal representatives once the process is complete,” said JLR South Africa.
Coetsee said the act was the result of months of unresolved dispute following a fire that destroyed the vehicle in October last year.
The incident has since become the centre of a standoff involving the dealership, the manufacturer and his insurer.

Coetsee maintains that despite repeated attempts to resolve the matter, he has received no meaningful support. He says the protest was a last resort to draw attention to his case.
