Kusche carries Onderberg pride to Two Oceans

George Kusche clocked an impressive finish time placing fourth at the half marathon.

The Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon, powered by BYD, once again proved to be a showcase of South African endurance and this year Onderberg’s George Kusche made his mark with a powerful performance.

On April 12 in Cape Town, Kusche crossed the finish line in 01:04:11, securing fourth place overall and proudly standing as the first South African home.

It was another milestone in a journey that has quickly captured the imagination of the running community.

Just last year, Kusche stunned the field at the 98th Comrades Marathon, finishing 12th overall in 05:41:23 – an extraordinary achievement for a novice. He was the first novice to cross the line, and his tactical race, which saw him surge through the halfway point in fourth place before holding on for a 12th-place, revealed both grit and promise.

Reflecting on his Two Oceans run, Kusche said: “I did my best and I am happy with the performance. I did not do much preparation for this one as I am focusing on the upcoming Comrades Marathon. I do not have a record to break, and I am going to compete and put all my strategies into place. I want to see how well I can do in this one.”

The Comrades remains central to his ambitions. “It is such a significant cultural event in South Africa. I want to run it, be part of that hype and excitement,” he said. Last year’s down-run tested his legs on the descents, but Kusche believes his build and strength will serve him well on the up-run. “I am only 26, so I have a long future in Comrades,” he added.

Kusche’s path to the national stage began at Laerskool Malelane, where he first competed in athletics and rugby.

At Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria, he shifted his focus to athletics and cross-country, qualifying for the Junior World Athletics Championships in the 800m with a time of 01:47.

His talent carried him to the United States, where he earned a BS in Actuarial Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2021 and a MS in Statistics from Northern Arizona University in 2023, while competing at NCAA Division I level.

Returning to South Africa last year, Kusche joined the Nedbank Running Club Gauteng North and quickly transitioned from track to road running. His rapid rise – from winning the Irene 48km in March 2025 to his Comrades debut, and now his Two Oceans triumph – has cemented him as one of the country’s most exciting prospects.

For Kusche, the Onderberg remains close to his heart. He frequently returns to visit his father and speaks fondly of his childhood in Malalane, where barefoot walks to school and touch rugby at break-time shaped his early sporting spirit.
