N4 freight corridor on high alert amid national truck protest

The N4 is at risk of disruption today, as the ATDF-ASA launches a nationwide shutdown.

Motorists, cross-border commuters and logistics operators, in the Lowveld are advised of a planned national shutdown by truck drivers today, May 30. While the protest is nationwide, local attention is heavily focused on the crucial N4 corridor linking Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Mozambique.

According to an alert issued by Fidelity Business Intelligence Analytics, the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF-ASA) has officially supported the protest action, which was scheduled to commence early this morning. Ongoing industry grievances include the employment of foreign national drivers and the broader regulation of the trucking sector.

The intelligence report identified areas surrounding the co-ordinates 25.800° S, 28.500° E along the N4 as a potential focal point for disruptions. Other key freight routes connecting to the province, such as the N3, N2, and N11, are also expected to face blockages.

The spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), Moeti Mmusi, said the department is aware of the planned action. He added that provincial traffic law enforcement and police are actively monitoring the situation to prevent lawlessness, handle potential blockades swiftly, and ensure the safety of all road users.
