Eight Mozambican nationals killed in N4 crash near Ngodwana

The minibus taxi was carrying 10 occupants from Mozambique to Gauteng. Eight were killed in the crash, while only two survived.

The N4 between Elands Valley and Ngodwana has reopened after being closed following a fatal crash that claimed the lives of eight Mozambican nationals travelling in a minibus taxi.

According to the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), Moeti Mmusi, the taxi collided with a truck on Tuesday, June 16.

“Eight occupants, including the driver, were declared dead at the scene, while two others were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The truck was travelling from Gauteng to Mbombela with two occupants, both of whom sustained minor injuries,” said Mmusi.

Mmusi added that the cause of the crash remains unclear at this stage, and an investigation is underway.

The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased.

“We extend our condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident, and we wish a speedy recovery to those who are receiving treatment in hospital. I also urge motorists to drive with caution and to rest whenever they feel tired,” said Macie.

Authorities have advised motorists to exercise caution when approaching the area, as emergency personnel are still on the scene and some debris remains on the roadway.

Motorists can use Schoemanskloof as an alternative route.
