DCM partners with SAPS to curb crime in Nokaneng

DCM and Sekhukhune SAPS partnered to raise awareness about crime and encourage community involvement in crime prevention.

Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM), in partnership with the Sekhukhune SAPS, held a crime awareness campaign and Youth Day commemoration event at Nokaneng Sports Grounds outside Steelpoort on June 19.

The campaign focused on illegal mining, theft of cables and domestic violence. The event was attended by pastors, faith-based organisations, mine management, traditional leaders, the SAPS, government departments and many others. Learners from Mmahlagare Combined School were educated on how to report criminal activities.

Entertainment was provided by Women in Action and mapanta teams, who performed poetry, songs and dances. The event kicked off with a prayer session and scripture reading led by Bp Philemon Mothoko, who discouraged crime in Nokaneng.

DCM’s socio-economic development officer, Tshidiso Seikaneng, urged all stakeholders, the government, the private sector and the community at large to stand up against crime.

“We plead with all stakeholders to work with SAPS in the fight against crime. Everyone has a role to play. DCM is also heavily affected by crime. A water project in the Nokaneng area, which began in 2011, has yet to provide water to the community due to the theft of cables.

“The mine’s focus is on socio-economic development in our neighbouring villages. We urge community members to refrain from destroying or damaging projects intended to benefit our communities. We also appeal to the community to help protect DCM’s infrastructure investments. Honesty is one of DCM’s core values, and where honesty prevails, crime has no place. Everyone attending today’s event is encouraged to share the message about the dangers of crime. DCM says no to crime.”

Seikaneng reiterated that crime hampers development in local communities. “For the SAPS to win the battle against crime, locals need to assist in reporting and blowing the whistle on criminal activities.”

The Sekhukhune SAPS station commander, Colonel Lekgaloa Leshilo, thanked the DCM for sponsoring the campaign. He said the purpose of the awareness programme was to educate the community about illegal mining, substance abuse and domestic abuse.

He added that the campaign was aimed at strengthening partnerships between the SAPS and the community in the fight against crime. “As the youth, you have to refrain from engaging in criminal activities. Drugs and substance abuse will destroy you.”

Community members were educated about preventative measures to combat crime. Various stakeholders shared the stage and explained the services they provide and how victims can be supported.

Each member of the community was urged to participate in projects aimed at reducing crime. They were further advised to utilise all the available structures to help the police. Members of the public can call the toll-free Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, SMS 32211, or use the My SAPS app to share information with law enforcement.

DCM concluded the event by handing out winter scarves and beanies.
