Marco Schalekamp bail amendment allows him to travel abroad

Through an affidavit, Schalekamp's told the Nelspruit court he would like to travel for employment purposes.

A bail amendment application by murder-accused Marco Schalekamp was granted in the Nelspruit Regional Court on July 1, allowing him to travel outside South Africa for business purposes.

The defence submitted an affidavit requesting that Schalekamp’s bail conditions be amended to permit international travel for work. The State did not oppose the application and Magistrate FS Makomo granted the request.

As part of the amended bail conditions, Schalekamp may travel outside South Africa for employment purposes. He must notify the investigating officer or branch commander in writing before any such trip, provide a full itinerary of his intended travel, and continue reporting in accordance with his original bail conditions until he leaves the country.

He must also resume reporting upon his return, subject to arrangements with the investigating officer. The investigating officer has been ordered to return Schalekamp’s passport to facilitate his travel.

Schalekamp is facing charges of murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident near the White River Rugby Club on June 5, 2025. Pieter Burger was fatally shot and a state witness, Arnold van Niekerk, who was at the scene, also sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Schalekamp was found at the scene inside his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his face and neck.

The court postponed the matter to September 4 for further consultation.
