Hazyview Rugby Club vice-captain reflects on unbeaten season
Channan Wieneke overcomes personal loss and knee injury while helping his team secure back-to-back league titles.
For Hazyview Rugby Club vice-captain Channan Wieneke, the club’s unbeaten season is about much more than victories on the scoreboard. It is a story of brotherhood, resilience and trust.
“It is an honour to say that we’ve been unbeaten this year,” said Wieneke. “Going undefeated isn’t just about winning. More importantly, it shows the trust we’ve built in each other as a unit.”
Comeback win sets tone for season
One of the defining moments of the season came during Hazyview’s pool match against Matsulu Rugby Club. Trailing by six points with time running out, the team fought back to score under the posts in the final seconds, securing a dramatic one-point victory.

“That win set the tone for our entire season,” he said.
Wieneke also enjoyed one of his strongest individual seasons, improving both his defence and goal-kicking. His 29 successful conversions played a key role in helping Hazyview Rugby Club win closely contested matches.
Support helps overcome loss and injury
However, the season was also marked by personal challenges. Wieneke lost a close friend, a family member and mentor, Kallie Versveld, while also recovering from a torn meniscus.
“Through it all, the team was always there to support me. It taught me that when I wear the Hazyview Rugby Club jersey, I’m not just representing myself. I’m playing for the people cheering us on and the brothers standing beside me,” he said.
Journey begins at school level
Wieneke began his rugby career at Numbi Primary School before playing for Curro Nelspruit and Hoërskool Nelspruit. He joined Hazyview Rugby Club in 2025 and has since helped the club win back-to-back Lowveld Mayors League titles in 2025 and 2026. His achievements also include selection for the Pumas U15 team in 2019 and the Pumas Platteland teams in 2021 and 2025.
He credits his parents, teammates and coaches for his success, particularly coach Manny Correia, who has supported him throughout his journey.
Now serving as vice-captain, Wieneke hopes to continue leading by example.
Looking ahead to the 2027 season, he plans to improve his fitness and speed as Hazyview Rugby Club aims to defend its unbeaten record.
