Police seize R4m dagga at Oshoek Port of Entry

An Eswatini-registered logistics truck has been impounded in Mpumalanga as investigators probe wider links in cross-border drug trafficking.

A suspect was arrested on August 17 for allegedly dealing in dagga after police intercepted a truck carrying the consignment at the Oshoek Port of Entry in Mpumalanga.

“During police search duties at the arrival site from the Kingdom of Eswatini into South Africa, police discovered 49 bags containing suspected dagga, with a combined weight of about 630 kg and an estimated street value of over R4 million,” Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe said.

Police also seized a Volvo horse and trailer bearing Kingdom of Eswatini registration plates, reportedly belonging to a logistics company based there.

Police probe cross-border syndicate

The suspect is expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court soon on charges relating to dealing in dagga.

Police investigations are continuing to establish the origin and intended destination of the consignment, as well as to determine whether other persons may be involved in the illegal drug trade.
