Intensified intelligence-driven operations in Mpumalanga have targeted wanted suspects in an ongoing crackdown on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Between August 19 and September 6, SAPS members, working closely with various law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders, conducted high-density operations targeting serious and violent crimes.

As a result of these efforts, 61 suspects were arrested for offences related to GBVF. Of the suspects arrested, 55 were charged with rape, while six were charged with attempted rape.

These arrests form part of the SAPS’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of crimes against women, children and other vulnerable persons are tracked down and brought before the courts to answer for their actions.

Police commissioner commends officers

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, commended the dedication and commitment displayed by members involved in these operations.

“Gender-based violence and femicide remains one of the priority crimes that the SAPS is determined to eradicate,” said Modise.

“We will continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations and strengthen partnerships with communities and stakeholders to ensure that perpetrators are identified, arrested and brought to justice. We urge victims and survivors of GBVF to report incidents without fear and to seek the necessary support and assistance. Communities also play a critical role in helping law enforcement by reporting criminal activities and providing information that may assist investigations.”
