Access to the Malelane Gate in the south of the Kruger National Park will be temporarily closed on Tuesday, September 22, due to a planned march by unemployed youth.

SANParks said the information received indicates the march by youth from the Nkomazi area bordering the park is intended to be a peaceful protest aimed at raising concerns affecting unemployed youth.

“Attempts to meet the organisers before the planned march were unsuccessful,” SANParks said in a statement.

As a precautionary measure and to ensure the safety of guests, staff and protesters, the gate will be closed from 08:00 on Tuesday until protesters have vacated the affected area and normal operations can safely resume.

“Guests, suppliers, staff and all other individuals requiring access to or from the Kruger National Park via Malelane Gate are strongly advised to make alternative travel arrangements and utilise other entry gates where possible during the period of the protest,” SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said.

The conservation authority said it will provide updates should there be any changes or if the gate is reopened earlier than anticipated.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and thank all visitors, stakeholders and members of the public for their patience, understanding and cooperation as we prioritise the safety and security of everyone involved,” Louw said.
