Hawks arrest two suspects following violent Lowveld Mall CIT heist
Two suspects are in custody following a joint Hawks operation into a violent cash-in-transit robbery, with a damaged getaway vehicle allegedly linked to the crime scene.
Two suspects, aged 32 and 38, were arrested during an early-morning raid today (September 24) following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery at Lowveld Mall in Hazyview.
The joint operation was carried out by the Hawks’ Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, alongside the National Intervention Unit and Crime Intelligence.
The arrests stem from a violent heist on September 19, in which an armed gang ambushed a CIT vehicle, opened fire and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. A security guard sustained injuries during the attack.
Arrests follow CIT investigation
Acting on intelligence, officers initially tracked down and apprehended the primary suspect in Marite. Information gathered during the arrest led investigators to a second co-conspirator in Mkhuhlu.
During the operation, law enforcement also impounded a getaway vehicle bearing visible damage, allegedly linked to the crime scene.
Both suspects face charges of cash-in-transit robbery.
In a statement released earlier today, the Mpumalanga Hawks confirmed that the suspects’ names are being withheld pending their formal court appearance, once administrative processing has been finalised.
Investigations remain active, and authorities have not ruled out further arrests.
