Ngodwana police remain on site monitoring the R539 through Schoemanskloof after responding to reports of heavy gunfire involving suspected illegal miners.

The route closure was confirmed by various sources on Wednesday, September 30. A video sent to Lowvelder captures the sound of heavy gunfire echoing through the area.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that police were dispatched to the scene at about 19:00.

“While officers found no suspects or active confrontation upon arrival, police remain on-site and are actively monitoring the situation,” he said.

This latest gun battle comes shortly after a similar shooting incident on Tuesday, September 29.

The road was temporarily closed as a safety measure for motorists, but has since been reopened.
