Search intensifies for 3 missing Kaapsehoop wild horses

A pregnant mare and two young colts have vanished from Kaapsehoop, threatening recent herd growth and putting the legacy of a poached stallion at risk.

It has been nearly three weeks since three horses from the Kaapsehoop wild horse herd went missing.

Carli Scheepers, spokesperson of the Kaapschehoop Conservancy, confirmed that a grey pregnant mare and two colts, a light brown one named Phoenix and a red colt, Willow, were last seen on October 8.

The missing horses come as a huge disappointment to residents as a lot of newborn foals joined the herd over the past three months, which proved a steady increase in horses. The total number of horses is 33. Phoenix is the last foal from one of the town’s stallions, Dennis, which was tragically poached in September 2025.

Volunteers join search for 3 missing horses

Over the past two years, many horses died due to poaching and wildfire incidents. “We have mountain rangers patrolling the area and have asked volunteers from the South African Bush Warrior Association to assist in the search,” she said.

Scheepers urged the public to send a message to the conservancy’s Facebook page or send an email to kaapschehoopvillage@gmail.com if they have any information on the horses’ whereabouts.
