I have just returned from a very special Christmas party, held by a very special
group of people, Nelspruit Hospice. This publicly subscribed organisation has been in existence for a little over seven years now, and has gone from strength to strength
in their dedicated work of caring for the terminally ill.
For most, it is understood that this type of illness is only confined to the elderly, but this is a not true. It can happen to anyone, and at any time of their lives, when hospital care can no longer help, and the patent is sent home with a pot of pills and a prayer.
Coping with a sick member of the family is not only tedious in itself, it is disruptive
to the whole family, and everyone suffers a certain amount of discomfort. Washing soiled bed-linen and handling incontinence can be devastating over a long period of time. In many cases, the patient undergoes medical, psychological and spiritual trauma during this period and needs specialized palliative care.
I just wonder how many people have breathed a sigh of relief to find that someone has been trained to help patients with this dreaded condition. Yes, Hospice climbs in when the family wants to climb out. They are a God send to many, and it doesn`t cost a cent!
Hospice workers are all volunteers apart from one trained and qualified Nursing Sister and a Full Time Secretary.
Thinking back on last nights Christmas Party, I am overwhelmed at the sheer exuberance and spirit of these wonderful people who give freely of their time and perform a service that is so onerous.
I salute you all Nelspruit Hospice.
May you have a Very Merry Christmas.
