Them Birds and Bees…

What really narks me is ignorance, and there is a lot of it going around.

What really narks me is ignorance, and there is a lot of it going around.

Now I am not complaining about the kind of ignorance that you meet every day from people whilst out shopping at your local super-market. No, I am talking about ignorance of our environment and the world in general but in particular….the HONEY BEE.

Did you know that one spoonful of food out of three that you shovel into you mouth is put there, thanks entirely to that industrious little fellow that you squish on your window pane if he happens to fly in.

Come on! Don`t tell me that you have forgotten that lesson your teacher taught you about pollination? That picture she drew on the blackboard of the flower, the stamen, the pistol, the stigma, and all in graphic detail. Remember?

Those busy little bees transferring pollen from the stamen to the stigma, and how seeds were formed at the base of the pistol? Yes, the basis for all of creation shown in a single flower….

Thing is, with modern technology ever rearing its ugly head, bees are being slaughtered by the million.

Just imagine a crop sprayer up there in Malelane, a single run of that aircraft with its deadly chemical spray will kill off thousands of innocent bees who are just doing what God intended, collecting nectar for the Queen.

In parts of America, they have calculated a drop in bee population of over 40%, that is astronomical, and very soon food production will grind to a nasty halt.

Here too in South Africa, we are guilty of using chemical killers in all walks of life and its high time that we all knew what was going on, and how these boffins in their endeavours to produce bigger and better, are in actual fact poisoning the industry with
its greed.

Yep! Organic is the way to go, or perhaps plan a veggie garden for next Spring? Oh!

Just one more word…

Don`t kill bees, they are the pollinators, and we desperately need them for our fruit and veg.
