Lots of fun at summer gala
More than 190 swimmers of Pretoria, Limpopo, Piet Retief, all over Mpumalanga as well as Swaziland and Mozambique made their way to Nelspruit to take part in the Valencia Summer Gala held at Van Riebeeck swimming pool on Saturday.
Valencia has been the sponsor for the past six years and Uniswim Swimming Club the host since 2009.
“The club is the largest in Mpumalanga with the most people
registered to Swimming South Africa. It is one of the major events on the calendar. It was an open gala, which meant that all swimmers were given the opportunity to participate, not only those who were registered.
“However, our recorded swimmers had the opportunity to compete againts people from all over,” said Grietjie Steyn, vice-chairman of Uniswim. Their aim was to qualify for level galas which would be in March and April. Medals were awarded to every age group, starting with six years up to 17 and older.
“The funds we managed to raise from this event are being used to sponsor less-advantaged participants,” continued Steyn.
Swimmers’ events included 50m, 100m and 200m,
including the 200m individual medley (IM), 400m and 800m freestyle.
