Muddy conditions poses a challenge
The Sabie Classic Mountain Bike race, one of the toughest on the mountain-biking calendar, was turned into an extreme challenge by the heavy rain that preceded the event.
A total of 3 000 mountain bikers competed, either in the 113km
ultra- or the 75km marathon, 45km half-marathon, 16km- and 10km fun ride. Those competing in the ultra marathon, who finished in the top 20, secured a guaranteed qualification for the marathon world championships later this year in Pietermaritzburg. The European riders, (Team Bulls) Urs Huber and Karl Platt, beat South African Kevin Evans into third position.
