LVCC bowling club announces new committee members

It was action galore at the LVCC bowling club on June 1. Nomads held their Annual General Meeting in conjunction with a fun day of bowls.

The day started for most bowlers with a glass of milk and a tot of Whiskey a real traditional Nomad’s drink.  The bowlers were then randomly chosen to play skip, second and lead.  The bowlers hailed from Hazyview, Nelspruit, Lvcc, White river, Barberton and Waterval Bowven. Soon the ball was on the roll and bowlers headed down to the Bowling Green to face their opponents.  Hats were put on and sunscreen was in order for the scourging lowveld sun.

Two games of 12 ends  were played. The bowler found the greens a bit tricky and had to concentrate to find the right grass and weight although the greens were running smoothly.

In the first session it was Thys van Zyl who won the best lead with Gerrie Swanepoel as best second and Cas van der Merwe was awarded for the best skip.

In session two it was Magret Muller for the best lead, Johan Feath as best second and Johan Botha as the best skip.

Overall winner was Elonor Storkey from Lvcc as best lead with Darryl Cross from Bungalows as best second and Larry Ireland also from Bungalows as best skip.

The ladies spider was won by Annette Stassen and the men spider was won by George Goosen. All funds will be donated to a charity of Nomads chose.

After a good day of bowls, the annual general meeting started. The players of the year was awarded with the most touchers went to Denis Paiva. Player of the year was Malcolm Tyerman and the President award was handed over to Sander Stassen.  A lovely hamper was raffled and the winner was Vel Manion from White River.

Nomads are registered members of Bowls Clubs and have no fixed abode, as the name implies, and play bowls at  various  venue  in order to raise funds that are used to help needy causes. The money is raised by members in the form of fining sessions at outings – when prizes are won, the winner is expected to make a donation to Nomads and this is how funds are raised. It is principle that donations are never in cash but in goods, products or services to members or groups of the community in need of help.

Six Nomads were presented with a survivor kit – Larry Ireland, Darryl Ireland, Peter Don, Jacque Stassen and Sander Stassen who will attend the Nomad’s nationals at Gauteng – Eden vale.  All Nomads enjoyed a “lekker” braai at the end.
