STEELPOORT – While most South Africans were glued to their television screens watching the recent Comrades Marathon, Eric Mabelane (50), was among Steelpoort ’s finest athletes.
He has been participating for the past 19 years. Although has never won the race, he has numerous accolades to show for in his long stint. He trains with the Steelpoort Marathon club on Tuesdays and Thursdays as he juggles with his job at Tubatse Ferrochrome Mine.
“I encourage the local youth and teenagers to abandon drugs and alcohol. I urge them to focus on sporting events as they will keep them healthy. There are many youths in our community whom could win the Comrades. All they need is training, dedication and hunger for success,” says Mabelane.
He completed his race in 10:14:5 and was awarded a bronze medal.
“This year’s race was very tough, the toughest ever in my life; people were collapsing along the way and others failed to complete the distance,” he added.
Those who wish to join Steelpoort Marathon club or to be coached by the marathon veteran, can contact him on 082-537-5929.
The recent Comrade Marathon in the male category was won by Bongmusa Mthembu, 2012 defending champion Ludwick Mamabolo was in the second spot and Gift Kelehe was in the third spot. This year’s race will be memorable as the best three runners were all the SA citizens.
The women race was won by Ellie Greenwood of Great Britain, with Russians twins Elena and Olesya Nurgalieva coming second and third place respectively.
