Aces make history on their home turf

History was made on Saturday at the Mbombela Stadium when Mpumalanga Black Aces defeated second on the Absa Premiership table, Ajax Cape Town by 1-0.

This was Aces’ first home victory since the 2014/15 Premier Soccer League’s Absa premiership season kicked off in the beginning of September, and Ajax Cape Town’s first defeat.

Before this clash, both teams had played a total of six league games with Ajax not having lost a match and Aces not winning a game at home.

In total Aces had played three league games at home of which they lost two and drew the other, but things changed this past Saturday and coach Clive Barker believes that this is just the beginning of better results.

“Today we played as a unit and I believe we could have easily won the game by four goals but my players wasted too many obvious goal scoring opportunities. But overall, I am happy with the results and I believe this victory has just unlocked opportunities for us,” Barker said after the game.

Dennies Masina’s 67th minute goal was enough to secure all three points for Aces, a first for this team at their home ground.

This victory has seen Aces moving from the 13th position on the log to occupy the 10th spot, with nine points.

The two teams will have a go at each other again when they meet this coming weekend in the Telkom Knockout Cup scheduled for Sunday at the Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town.
