Uplands’ swimmers take the honours
Uplands College received swimming's highest honour when the team was crowned the interhigh school gala's champions last week.
Although Hoërskool Nelspruit topped the medal table with 60 and Uplands College came second with 57 medals, the winning team were determined by the place-point system which put Uplands first with 801,5 points followed by NHS on 721,5. Penryn College took the third spot with 528,5 points on the scoreboard.
The u/19 boys of Uplands and NHS were eyeing a win in the 200-metre relay event, but it was Uplands that finished first in a time of 01:51,93.
Star athlete of Nelspruit and Uniswim, Liza-Mari Drummond, set up two new records for girls u/16 in the 50-metre backstroke with a new time of 34,41 seconds – as well as in the 50-metre freestyle. She also received a gold medal in the 100-metre freestyle.
Curro’s Jordyn Minifie added a few medals to her school’s tally with a first place in the opening event, the 200-metre individual medley, 50-metre breaststroke and 100-metre backstroke.
Bergvlam’s highlight of the day was when Elsabe Rautenbach (u/16) added four gold medals to her stash. She secured a first place in the 100-metre breast, 50-metre fly, 50-metre breast and 200-metre individual medley.
Landau van Rooyen of Uplands also touched the wall first a few times – in the boys u/15 200-metre individual medley, 50-metre fly and 50-metre freestyl – and came second in the 100-metre freestyle.
