Locals embark on the Cape Town Cycle Challenge

Although many people were a bit disappointed with the Cape Town Cycle Tour this year, with it being reduced from its original 109 kilometres to 47, it was still an unforgettable experience. It is estimated that about 60 locals from various clubs like Valencia, Jock Cycle Club, Cycle Lab and Komatipoort made their way to the mother city for the race. Many riders wore red socks and even painted their nails red. Some decorated their bikes in red and some wore plastic firefighter hats with the words “thank you” written on them. This was to commemorate the firemen who risked their lives during the raging fires across the Cape.

“For me, the shorter route was nice because you had the whole day ahead of you. It was also very nice to see all the supporters along the road, and also seeing firemen supporting the cyclists,” said Anton van Tonder, a local rider, pictured above.
