Team Rugged wins at Kwena Dam
Stephan Jordaan of Team Rugged weighed in the largest fish of the day at 2,435 kilograms in the second round of the Lowveld Bass Trail (LBT) at Kwena Dam on Saturday.
This was the only fish of the tournament that weighed in at over two kilograms.
For the second competition in a row, the attendance record for an LBT event was broken as 46 teams entered. Only nine managed to bring a five-fish limit to the scales.
A whopping 27 teams boated one bass or less. Fortunately, the weather was merciful and the customary Kwena wind was nowhere to be seen. As a matter of fact, the anglers experienced a magnificent early-autumn day on the water.
The tricky fishing conditions made it difficult for anglers to dial into a specific pattern at Kwena. Texas rigged ultravibe speed craws in watermelon seed and watermelon red fished on the edges of isolated reed beds in five to seven feet of water, put a good number of fish in the boats. Other soft plastics anglers did well and included regular and magnum flukes, dead ringers, and grubs in a multitude of colours.
A few teams had some top water success, with the largest bass of the day being taken on a black and silver zara spook.
The next leg of the LBT will take place at Vygeboom Dam on Saturday April 11, and proceedings for the day will once again take place at Machado Boat Club. Fishing will commence at 06:00 sharp.
Anyone planning to fish the Vygeboom leg must take note that the public slipway at the dam is hardly operational, and for this reason the slipways at Machado Boat Club will be used at a rate of R100 per boat.

Kwena Dam is a combined gravity and arch-type dam on the Crocodile River near Lydenburg, Mpumalanga. The dam is three decades old (established in 1984), has a catchment area of 954 square kilometres, and serves mainly as drinking water and for irrigation purposes.
