Souties take spoils in final match at LVCC
The club's Soutie team won the cricket match by 144 runs.
The players could not have asked for better weather at the annual Soutie vs Dutchie cricket match which was played at LVCC on Saturday.
The tournament which sees players from the club play against one another has been going since 2008. Saturday marked the final match at the club’s current grounds as they are moving along with the hockey, squash and tennis subclubs.
The Dutchies emerged victorious in the first year and again in 2013, but the Souties have taken the spoils in every other match, including this year. The Dutchies won the loss and elected to field first.
The opening partnership of 102 runs in 20 overs between Dylan Cresswell who scored 70 off 89, and Clayton Maggs who made 34 off 53 got the Souties off to a good start with the bat. Skipper Dwayne Obermeyer’s century 113 off 64 proved to be the Dutchies’ undoing.
Their best bowler Jakes Jacobs went for 63/2 in eight overs. They could not prevent the Souties from amassing a total of 262/6 in 40 overs. The Dutchies lost wickets with regularity. Dariah de Villiers and Hylton Cruse made an effort with the bat to score 40 off 52 and 13 off 30 respectively. Their 54-run partnership for the fourth wicket was not enough and the team was bowled out for 118 in 25,2 overs.
Soutie bowlers Dale Hes managed 13/4 in 4,2 overs and Shane Davies got in 25/3 in seven overs.
The match was followed by a T20 social match between former and future players. Despite many of them not having played cricket in years, it was evident that it is still in their blood.
The players thanked MRA Insurance, MRA Health, Spur, Vodacom and Mfuwe for their sponsorships which made the event possible.
