Tough competition on the greens
The Mpumalanga bowls team comprising Marlet Ireland (Bungalows), Miranda Paiva (White River), Jeanette Richards (Nelspruit), Martie Janse van Vuuren (Barberton), Marie Saayman (Barberton), Annette van Reynevelt (Secunda), Annetjie Roos (Groblersdal) and Marina Smith (Nelspruit), competed in the Bowls South African Open A Interdistrict Championship which was hosted by Port Natal Bowls from March 9 to 13.
Mpumalanga competed against nine other districts namely Eastern Province, Boland, Sables, Kingfisher, Sedibeng, Eden, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg.
Nine games were played over five days.
Two points were awarded to the winning team with one additional point to the side with the highest shot aggregate.
Competition was tough but a few lessons were learnt.
“The weather was great, except for one day that the wind blew the bowls from one side to the other with no control over your
delivery,” said Ireland.
In the finals it was Johannesburg and Western Province who had to fight it out on the greens but after a couple of ends it was clear that Johannesburg had what it took to be the top bowlers.

• Johannesburg – gold
• Western Province – silver
• Sables – bronze
• Ekhurleni – bronze.
Mpumalanga after nine rounds finished in seventh place.
