Young cyclist wins junior road tour by main force
The 2015 Pennypinchers Junior Road Cycle Tour pitted men younger than 23 against one another over four days.
The fastest young riders in the country were recently pitted against one another in a four-day battle in five stages in and around Mbombela.
During the 2015 Pennypinchers Junior Road Cycle Tour men younger than 23 race for glory in three age categories: u/16 boys, junior men and u/23 men.
The first stage consisted of a 120-kilometre road race in Schoemanskloof. In the u/23s, Joshua Buschel took first place and Kent Main came second.
The following day there was a 100-kilometre race to Kaapmuiden and back. Ryan Gibbons took the win and Main came second, placing him in the overall lead after two stages. There were two stages with a criterium around Mbombela Stadium and a time trial in the afternoon.
James Fourie won the sprint to the finishing line against Mornay van Heerden. Gibbons won the time trial with Fourie in second place.
Main took the final race to White River and Sabie to win the tour overall.
After the final stage the rider standings showed he finished the 350 kilometres in a time of 11:09:58. Fourie came in almost 10 minutes later to take second place, with Gibbons in third with 11:22:18.
In the junior men Dylan le Roux of team EUS, took first place in a time of 11:58:44. He was followed by Jarrod Hattingh in 11:00:02 and Aidan van Niekerk in 11:01:29.
In the u/16s Jason Oosthuizen completed the 222 kilometres first in a time of 7:20:57. Devin Shortt was second with only 68 seconds, separating the two riders.
Travis Barrett’s 7:23:14 was enough for him to secure third place.
