Hockey clubs from as far as Emalahleni and Secunda made their way to Curro College Nelspruit last weekend to partake in this year’s Mpumalanga Knock-out Tournament.
Other clubs that participated were White River, Nelspruit, Middelburg, LVCC, Impala, KaNyamazane, Lydenburg and Bushbuckridge. This was the first year that KaNyamazane participated.
The season was kicked off in style at Curro’s new AstroTurf, and is hosted by Mpumalanga Hockey. “We would like to heartily thank the headmaster of Curro, Mr Andrew Collie for making their brand-new AstroTurf and superb facilities available for the hosting of this year`s tournament.
“Their immaculate new Astro-Turf, the support from Ryan Mcarthy, the sports coordinator and the aesthetics of the school and vicinity, this year’s tournament was rated as one of the best ever hosted in Mpumalanga,” says Keith Erasmus, president of Mpumalanga Hockey Association.
The cream of the crop will now advance to the final which will be played at Curro this Sunday (April 19). The ladies final starts at 15:00 and the men’s at 16:15.
Both sections are watching the players who have made themselves available for provincial selection – but these players will be assessed during specific trial dates as well.
Breathtaking views of the Lowveld also contributed to a great tournament.
