Pillay youngest cyclist to clinch classic
The 16-year-old managed to maintain his cutting edge on the road in a time of 02:59:13 to come out on top in what turned out to be a great finish.
Local rider, Demarco Pillay, became the youngest cyclist to win the 100-kilometre Dups Mafutseni Cycle Classic outside Manzini over the weekend.
The Galito’s rider further beat country-man and defending champion, also of the Lowveld, Damon Halderman‘s time of 03:08:20 to finish ahead of the equally forceful pair Calvin Louw and Joseph Waring who also recorded 02:59:13.
The championship expectedly never came on a silver platter for the champion as he found himself on the backfoot on many occasions.
The race started at Mafutseni through to Madlangempisi and back to the starting point.
The bubbly Demarco said featuring prominently in most races in the country in the past year came in handy.
“I was in the top five last year. I did my homework and prepared for the climbs. It was a tough race overall.”
