Women impress on the tees

The annual Senior Women’s Golf Nationals, which are sponsored by Bateleur Lifestyle Estate, were hosted at Nelspruit Golf Club and White River Country Club’s courses from May 17 to 20.
South Africa’s best senior golf ladies had a great week on the tees. Numerous competitors also impressed with meticulous putting and well-timed short games.
Mpumalanga, on a rotational basis, has the opportunity to be the host every 13 years.
Two hundred women from all over South Africa, represented their regions with the general consensus being that the warm hospitality of the Lowveld made this an unforgettable experience.
Lorraine Smith (Western Province) was the gross winner with a total of 158, with Lynn Slogrove (Eastern Province) was the runner-up on 162. Vanessa Nigrini (Gauteng North) won the Stableford division with
58 points, with Eileen King (Gauteng) as runner-up with
74 points.
Judy Paterson, Susan Reeve, Marie Robinson and Atri Wilson (KwaZulu-Natal B) won the nett team prize and Christine Roos, Emma Hall, Eileen King and Liz Reed (Gauteng East) won the Stableford team event.
On Sunday May 17 it was the start of the tournament with the flag-raising ceremony at White River. Teams were ably led in by the piper, Darren Jooste and Uplands College students led the national anthem.
“This tournament was an excellent opportunity to showcase the Lowveld and everyone involved did his or her utmost to keep the good reputation of this region intact. I want to extend a warm thank you, on behalf of Senior Women’s Golf Mpumalanga, to all involved,” said Wilma van Rensburg, president of Senior Women’s Golf Mpumalanga.
There was also an exclusive gala dinner at Ingwenyama Conference & Sports Resort on Tuesday. The ladies felt spoiled to enjoy a fantastic dinner at a lovely venue, attended to by a team of friendly staff.
“Three over 80s got special recognition for attending,” said Van Rensburg.
“The prize-giving took place at Nelspruit Golf Club on Wednesday May 20 and again they were spoilt with a truly exceptional lunch before taking to the road.”
