Fast-paced action at squash fund-raiser
The squeaks of rubber-soled takkies and the thuds of squash balls as they bounced off the walls filled the White River Squash Club recently.
The purpose of the event was to raise funds to construct squash courts at Uplands.
The small group of players participated in three rounds of a handicap-format tournament.It gave the weaker players a head start and enabled players of all strengths to compete relatively equally.
Competition was tough but good-natured as several players smashed their way to victory.
The plate final was contested between Dave Ernstzen and Jakes Jacobs, with Ernstzen grabbing the bragging rights.
Chas Prettejohn and Dave Smythe played in the main final, with Prettejohn emerging the victor.
Players restored their energy with mouthwatering wors rolls, sponsored by Mario’s, after the tournament concluded.
The proceeds of the tournament will go towards developing squash courts at Uplands College.
White River Squash Club strongly believes that having another club in town will help the sport grow in strength and enable more juniors to come through the ranks.
