Try your hand at golf under the stars

Golfers have always pictured a perfect day on the greens with the sun shining brightly, a light breeze to keep things cool and a majestic sunset to conclude 18 holes on
the green.
This vision had now, however, taken a
180 degree turn with the introduction of night golf to the Lowveld on Thursday
June 4 at the White River Country Club.
This golfing experience was enhanced with LED multicoloured golf balls, neon lights and glowing flagsticks. Caps were also replaced with headlamps and torches that guided golfers on their merry way.
This initiative was thanks to the Firefly Golf Company that brought this form of sporting entertainment to the Lowveld and according to the reaction of those on the field this was definitely a good move.
Werner van der Westhuizen, head of the Firefly Group was very satisfied with the response during the evening and expressed the hope that this would grow into a regular event in the Lowveld.
“It has been a fantastic event and the golfers really enjoyed seeing their pictures afterwards,” Van der Westhuizen stated.
He made sure that he set up each event professionally with a special service to clients according to their needs and desires. All packages included night-golf equipment, set-up of the event, staff to assist players during play and an additional photographer to capture the moment.
“Golf country clubs can now stay open and operational for longer which brings in extra money for the club as business deals and functions can now be held after-hours,” Van der Westhuizen added.
JP and Mariette Palmer-Pilgrim are the franchise owners of Firefly Lowveld and were eager to host more events of this nature now that it had been officially launched in Mpumalanga.
The course normally took half a day to set up with play starting any time from 18:00, depending on the season.
“The Lowveld is one of the best locations to play a round of night golf over nine holes as it has a great climate, even at night. This will be open to the general public,” JP said.
“It is all about creating a quality environment for golfers to have good and fun time out on the course.
“This unique experience adds an extra dimension to anyone’s golfing game,”
he added.
Exposure to night golf will also give Lowvelders the opportunity to be part of the Moonrise tour, which well-known SA golf guru, Dale Hayes, will be promoting.
