Nocturnal cyclists invade the city in their masses

Numerous cyclists were welcomed by a bright blue moon last week when the Lowveld’s first Critical Mass kicked off at The Farm Stall at Hall’s Gateway.

Even though it was off to a rocky and unpleasant start due to a bystander’s behaviour, the situation was quickly contained and due to it not having any relation to the event, the latter could continue without any hiccups.

The 10km ride covered a big part of Mbombela at an easy pace with a stop for drinks after 45 minutes.

Critical Mass is a cycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities across the world.

It’s purpose isn’t usually formalised beyond the direct action of meeting at a set location and time and travelling as a group through the city and having fun.

It also places the spotlight on safety, social time in the city’s streets and utilising the city’s facilities for social interaction.

Imagine around 100 cyclists on bikes of all shapes and sizes with fairy lights, glow sticks and bells moving through the city together.

What made the event extra special, is the fact that it’s not a race, but a social get-together.

If you want to be part of the next Critical Mass, be at the same venue on August 28, at 18:30. You will need a bicycle, a helmet, cash for a drink and, off course, passion and spirit.
